Cracked Feet

Cracked feet, also known as heel fissures, can be uncomfortable and sometimes even painful. They occur when the skin on your feet becomes dry and loses its elasticity, leading to fissures or cracks. Here are some common causes and tips for dealing with cracked feet:

At Renew+Refresh we use a state-of-the-art diode laser to safely do into the deep dermis where the cracks are most tender. This laser treatment kills fungus and other bacteria while closing up the fissures within the heels. It is a very safe and comfortable procedure that can be done year-round on all skin types. This treatment is pain-free, but those who are highly ticklish may feel light sensation.

Depending on the severity of the damage to the feet, multiple sessions will be required with at-home care between each treatment.

Pricing starts at $75.00 number of sessions needed will vary per person.

Causes:

  1. Dry Skin: Lack of moisture is a primary cause. This can be due to weather conditions, dehydration, or certain medical conditions. This is also common in people who wear work boots daily.
  2. Excessive Pressure: Standing for long periods or walking barefoot can put pressure on the heels, leading to cracks.
  3. Improper Footwear: Ill-fitting shoes or open-back shoes can contribute to cracked feet by causing friction.
  4. Health Conditions: Certain skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or thyroid disorders can also lead to dry and cracked skin.

Tips for Treatment and Prevention:

  1. Moisturize Regularly: Apply a thick moisturizer or foot cream to your feet daily, especially after bathing and before bed.
  2. Exfoliate: Use a foot scrub or a pumice stone to gently remove dead skin cells and smoothen rough patches.
  3. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your body and skin hydrated from within.
  4. Wear Proper Footwear: Opt for well-fitting shoes with good support, and avoid walking barefoot, especially on hard surfaces.
  5. Use Foot Soaks: Soaking your feet in warm water with Epsom salts or essential oils can help soften the skin and relieve discomfort.
  6. Avoid Harsh Products: Steer clear of harsh soaps or exfoliants that can strip away natural oils from your skin.
  7. Protect Your Feet: Use a moisturizing foot cream or petroleum jelly and wear socks to bed to help lock in moisture overnight.
  8. Consider Medical Intervention: If the cracks are severe or infected, you will be referred to a prescribing medical professional.

Additional Advice:

  • Trim Toenails Carefully: Ingrown toenails or sharp edges can exacerbate cracked feet. Keep your toenails trimmed properly to avoid further irritation.
  • Maintain a Healthy Diet: Eating foods rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly those containing essential fatty acids and antioxidants, can promote skin health.
  • Avoid Hot Water: Hot water can strip away natural oils from your skin, contributing to dryness. Use lukewarm water instead for bathing or soaking your feet.
  • Don't Over-soak: While foot soaks can be beneficial, over-soaking can strip away natural oils and exacerbate dryness. Limit foot soaking sessions to 10-15 minutes.
  • Be Patient: Healing cracked feet takes time and consistent care. Be patient and persistent with your foot care routine.

By following these tips and incorporating a regular foot care lasering, you can effectively manage and prevent cracked feet, promoting overall foot health and comfort.
